# Sending documents for signature with eSignature

> DocuSign-backed envelopes for real contracts and authorizations, tracked from sent to viewed to signed.

**eSignature**, found as its own item in the web sidebar, is a DocuSign-powered way to get contracts, authorizations, and other documents signed — separate from the built-in signature pad customers use to accept a [proposal](/articles/sending-signing-and-tracking-a-proposal). Create an envelope from a template, send it to one or more recipients, and track exactly where each one stands — sent, viewed, or signed — from the same screen.

Reach for this when you need a real signed authorization or contract on file; reach for a proposal's built-in signature when you just need a customer to approve pricing.
